DESIGNING FOR BURLEIGH HEADS

What Shapes Your Burleigh Heads Design

Burleigh is one of the Gold Coast’s most sought-after coastal suburbs — and your outdoor space should match. Here’s what we look at when designing for properties in this area.

LOCATION

400–600m²

Typical coastal lot size

Established beachside suburb — older character homes, knockdown-rebuilds, and modern townhouses. Larger blocks inland toward Burleigh Waters. Smaller sites mean every square metre counts — layout, screening, and functional zones need careful planning.

SOIL & DRAINAGE

Sandy

Free-draining Rudosol soils

Mostly flat near the coast with sandy, free-draining soils — well suited to native and coastal planting but won’t hold moisture or nutrients for long. Inland shifts to heavier clay that needs a completely different planting approach.

COUNCIL OVERLAYS

Flood Overlay

Plus acid sulfate below 5m AHD

Most of coastal Burleigh sits within the flood assessment required overlay. Acid sulfate soils flag early for earthworks. Bushfire hazard concentrated near the headland & national park. Waterfront controls along Tallebudgera Creek and canals.

CLIMATE

1,302mm

Annual rainfall · 25°C max · 67% humidity

Subtropical — 94 rain days per year. Significant salt spray and onshore winds east of Gold Coast Highway. Species must handle salt exposure. No frost risk.

Common Questions About Landscape Design in Burleigh Heads

How much does landscape design cost in Burleigh Heads?

Our design packages start from $2,200 inc GST for a remote Plant Plan, $4,400 inc GST for Concept + Planting, and $6,600 inc GST for Concept + Master Plan + Planting Plan. The right package depends on the size and complexity of your project. See our full packages or read our cost guide.

What’s the difference between a landscaper and a landscape designer?

A landscaper builds — they install gardens, paving, retaining walls, and irrigation. A landscape designer plans — we create the design, select species, resolve the layout, and produce the plans your landscaper builds from. Think architect vs builder. Most homeowners need both, in that order.

Do I need a landscape plan for my Burleigh Heads property?

If you’re on a compact Burleigh lot, absolutely. Smaller sites amplify every design decision — the wrong tree can shade your whole yard in three years, and poor drainage on sandy coastal soil can undermine paving. A plan helps you get the layout, species, and drainage right the first time. Properties near Tallebudgera Creek or within overlay areas benefit even more from having a designer review the site constraints before construction starts.

How long does the design process take?

A Planting Plan takes around 1 week. A Concept + Planting Plan typically runs around 2 weeks from workshop to final presentation. A Concept + Master Plan + Planting Plan is around 4 weeks. Timelines depend on revision rounds and your availability for the initial workshop.

Can you recommend landscapers to build the design?

Yes — from concept to contractor. We work with a network of trusted Gold Coast landscapers and can connect you with the right builder for your project. Your design gives them a clear scope to quote from, so you can compare quotes confidently.

What plants work best near the coast in Burleigh Heads?

Coastal Burleigh needs salt-tolerant species that handle sandy, free-draining soil and onshore wind. We regularly use Westringia, Lomandra, Dianella, Coastal Banksia, Tuckeroo, and Pandanus for structure. For screening, Syzygium and Lilly Pilly varieties handle salt better than most hedging species. The key is matching the right species to your specific exposure — a property one street back from the highway needs different planting than one on the beachfront.
