How Much Does Landscape Design Cost on the Gold Coast?

Landscape design on the Gold Coast runs from $1,200 for a Plant Plan to $6,600 for a full Concept + Master Plan — all fixed fee. The design fee is separate from your build budget. At $80,000–$150,000 builds, the design typically runs 4–7% of the total project. At Habitat, there are no hourly rates, no surprises, and no work starts until you’ve agreed to the price in writing.

This guide covers Habitat’s design fees, what builds actually cost in the region (because most people searching this question want both numbers), and how to work out which package fits your scope.

Q: What does a full landscaping build actually cost on the Gold Coast?

The design fee is separate from your landscaping build cost. Most clients want both numbers before they start. Here’s a realistic range based on current Gold Coast market conditions:

  • Planting refresh or single-area install: $5,000–$25,000 (landscaper supply + labour)
  • Mid-range full residential build (paving, planting, retaining, some structure): $40,000–$90,000
  • Complex residential (earthworks, pool surround, multi-level, bespoke structure): $90,000–$180,000+
  • Rural estate / commercial multi-zone: quoted per zone, typically $30,000–$80,000+ per zone

These are estimates based on common project types in our service area — Gold Coast, Northern NSW, Scenic Rim. Your landscaper quotes the build separately after you have a design plan to quote against. The design fee is the document that makes their quote accurate and comparable across multiple trades.

What’s in each package?

Plant Plan — $900 / $1,200

A species-by-species planting schedule showing what goes in the ground and where. Includes layout illustratives your landscaper or a competent DIYer can follow directly. Common uses: DA batter stabilisation compliance, rental property freshen-ups, single garden bed redesigns, planting refresh after a build. Part-site (1–3 beds, up to 80 sqm) at $900; full property at $1,200. Delivered remotely in 5–7 days, 100% upfront.

Remote Concept + Planting — $3,190

Same deliverables as the on-site Concept + Planting — a full 2D concept layout plus detailed planting design — with a video consultation replacing the on-site workshop. You supply photos, a video walkthrough, and any existing plans; we use QLD Globe, satellite imagery, and Google Earth Pro alongside your footage to do the rest. Suits properties outside the Gold Coast area or straightforward sites without significant complexity. 100% upfront, ~2 weeks from consultation.

Concept + Planting (on-site) — $3,960

Starts with an on-site strategy workshop (2–3 hours on your property with Kieran). From there: a full 2D concept layout covering spaces, levels, circulation, structures, and material intent — plus a detailed planting design. What your landscaper can do with this: produce a desktop estimate accurate enough to budget a job. Paid across two equal stages of $1,980 — the first before the workshop, the second before plans are delivered. Presented on a video call; 2 weeks from workshop.

Concept + Master Plan (on-site) — $6,600

Everything in the Concept package plus a full master plan: setout dimensions, surface schedules, planting zones, 3D rendered views, intent plans for lighting and irrigation. What your landscaper can do with this: produce a quote (subject to their on-site check-measure) — not just an estimate. Every contractor prices against the same documented specifications. Three stages of $2,200. Three weeks from workshop. The go-to package for complex sites, $100,000+ builds, and properties where all trades need to work from the same brief.

Q: What’s included in every package?

  • Strategy workshop (on-site for Concept packages; video consultation for Remote + Plant Plan)
  • Concept plan or planting schedule — delivered as PDF
  • Video presentation call — you see the work before paying the balance
  • One revision round included
  • PDF deliverables formatted for your landscaper

Not included in any package:

  • Survey, engineering reports, DA lodgement, certifier fees
  • Physical construction or landscaping work
  • Drainage design, structural retaining engineering, or council-stamped documentation

Plans are formatted for a landscaper to build a detailed estimate from. A good landscaper will always check-measure on site before finalising their quote — this is industry standard and protects both sides.

Q: How does the design fee compare to the build cost?

The 4–7% rule holds across most of Habitat’s residential range:

  • Plant Plan $1,200 = 3–10% of a $12,000–$40,000 planting or freshen-up scope
  • Concept + Planting $3,960 = 4–7% of a $55,000–$90,000 build
  • Concept + Master Plan $6,600 = 4–6% of a $110,000–$165,000 build

If the design fee feels disproportionate to your stated build scope, the brief is probably misaligned — not the pricing. A 20-minute Discovery Call will work that out before anyone commits to anything.

The more useful frame: catching a design decision on paper costs nothing to change. Catching it after the paving is laid is a different number.

Q: Is Gold Coast landscape design more expensive than other Australian cities?

Broadly comparable to Brisbane and Sydney for equivalent scope. The Gold Coast has a genuinely different climate from temperate southern capitals — subtropics mean a different species palette, different drainage considerations, and different soil profiles (clay overlaid with fill in canal precincts; red volcanic in Tamborine; sandy on coastal strips). A local designer who knows the difference between Currumbin and Mudgeeraba in terms of what will actually grow is worth more than a cheaper interstate quote that doesn’t know the region.

Q: What if I just want a rough idea without paying for a full concept?

That’s the discovery call. Twenty minutes, no fee, no obligation. We use it to understand your brief, check which package makes sense for your scope, flag anything on the site or council side that might affect the design, and answer your questions. No package is sold until we’ve both agreed it’s the right fit. If you’re a better fit for a referral partner — or for a smaller scope than Habitat handles — we’ll say so on the call.

Q: Does the price change for complex sites?

The standard packages cover most residential complexity within the Gold Coast service area. Sites with significant slope, multi-level layout, or Tamborine Mountain-specific vegetation management constraints may involve a brief scoping conversation before a package is confirmed — these are sometimes better served by the Concept + Master Plan package rather than C+P, simply because the documentation level protects the client better when trades are navigating complex conditions.

Rush turnaround add-on: +$220 for 48-hour delivery on Plant Plans only.

Q: Why do some landscape designers charge hourly?

Hourly billing puts budget risk on the client. If a designer quotes “$150/hr + how long it takes,” you have no clear ceiling, no predictable project budget, and no incentive alignment — the designer’s revenue goes up the longer the project takes. Fixed-fee design means the scope is agreed before work starts, and the designer is incentivised to scope efficiently, not pad hours. Industry practice varies; Habitat charges fixed fees only. You know the cost before a single hour of work begins.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a landscape designer charge on the Gold Coast?

Habitat’s residential packages run from $1,200 (Plant Plan) to $6,600 (Concept + Master Plan), all fixed fee. There’s no hourly rate — you know the cost before work starts. The right package depends on the scope of your project, not the size of your property. A 20-minute discovery call is the fastest way to work out which package fits.

What’s the cheapest landscape design option on the Gold Coast?

The Plant Plan at $1,200 is the entry point — a species-by-species planting schedule for your site. A part-site version covering 1–3 beds (up to 80 sqm) is available at $900. If your project needs spatial design — layout, structures, circulation — the Concept + Planting package starts at $3,960.

Why hire a landscape designer separately from your landscaper?

A landscape designer produces a documented scope — the plan. A landscaper builds it. Working with an independent designer first means your landscaper is quoting against a clear brief, not guessing at your intentions during a site visit. One documented scope means every trade estimates against the same specification. The design fee typically pays for itself in better-controlled build costs and avoided rework.

What’s included in the Habitat design fee?

Every Concept package includes an on-site strategy workshop, full 2D concept layout, and a video presentation call where you see the work before paying the balance. The Concept + Master Plan adds setout dimensions, surface schedules, 3D views, and lighting + irrigation intent. Plant Plans include layout illustratives and a planting schedule. One revision round is included in every package.

Does the price change if I’m outside the Gold Coast?

The Remote Concept + Planting package ($3,190) is designed for clients outside the Gold Coast service area, or for straightforward properties that don’t require an on-site workshop. Same deliverables as the on-site version — concept plan + planting design — with a video consultation replacing the workshop.
