
Why the Gold Coast Hinterland Needs Bushfire-Conscious Design
Most people think “bushfire” and picture rural NSW or Victoria. But Gold Coast City Plan has a bushfire hazard overlay that covers significant chunks of the hinterland and semi-rural suburbs. Mudgeeraba, Bonogin, Worongary, Tallai, Springbrook, Currumbin Valley, Tallebudgera Valley — these areas all sit within or adjacent to bushfire-prone vegetation.The overlay doesn’t mean your property will burn. It means the vegetation type and topography create elevated risk, and council expects development to account for it. For buildings, that triggers specific BAL assessments and construction requirements. For your garden? There’s no mandatory planting code, but the design choices you make in the landscape around your home directly affect how fire behaves if it reaches your property.That’s where good design comes in. Understanding the Zones: Asset Protection and Beyond
Bushfire-resilient garden design works on a zone principle. Think of it as concentric rings radiating out from your house, each with different planting rules.Inner Zone (0-10 metres from the house)
This is your Asset Protection Zone (APZ) — the most critical area. The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services guidelines are clear: keep fuel loads minimal close to the building. In design terms, that means:- Low, well-spaced planting — groundcovers and low shrubs under 300mm, with gaps between plant masses rather than continuous fuel
- No trees overhanging the roof — canopy separation from structures is non-negotiable
- Hardscape as firebreaks — gravel paths, stone mulch, paved entertaining areas. These interrupt fuel continuity
- No bark mulch against the house — use gravel, pebble, or decomposed granite in this zone. Bark mulch is fuel

Outer Zone (10-30+ metres)
Beyond the APZ, you can gradually increase planting density, height, and species diversity. The idea is graduated transition — from sparse and low near the house, to denser and taller as you move away. This slows fire progression and reduces radiant heat reaching the building.In this zone, you can include feature trees, screening hedges, and layered planting — but species selection still matters. High-oil species right at the 10-metre mark defeats the purpose.Species Selection: What to Plant (and What to Avoid)
Not all plants burn the same way. Species with high volatile oil content, loose papery bark, or fine dry foliage are significantly more flammable than dense, moisture-retaining species. The trick is choosing plants that are both low-flammability and suited to Gold Coast conditions.
Low-Flammability Species for the Inner Zone
- Lomandra longifolia (Spiny-headed Mat Rush) — dense, moisture-retaining foliage. Tough, drought-tolerant once established, and one of the best low-fuel native groundcovers for this climate. Multiple cultivars available for different heights and habits.
- Dianella caerulea (Blue Flax Lily) — strappy foliage, blue berries, handles full sun to part shade. Low fuel load, good as a mass-planted groundcover in the APZ.
- Westringia fruticosa (Coastal Rosemary) — dense, fine-textured shrub. Retains moisture well, responds to shaping, works as a low hedge or border. A genuine workhorse in bushfire-conscious planting.
- Myoporum parvifolium (Creeping Boobialla) — fast-spreading, dense groundcover. Succulent-type leaves retain moisture. Ideal for covering bare ground in the inner zone where you want green, not gravel.
- Carpobrotus glaucescens (Pigface) — succulent native groundcover with high moisture content and very low flammability. Handles coastal and hinterland conditions. Colourful flowers are a bonus.
- Agave and succulents — fire-resistant by nature due to high water content. Use architecturally in gravel gardens close to the house.
Species to Keep Away From the House
- Eucalyptus — iconic, beautiful, and highly flammable. Volatile oils in the leaves, loose bark that sheds as fuel, and canopy that can carry fire rapidly. Plant them, but well beyond the APZ — 20 metres minimum from structures.
- Melaleuca (Paperbark) — the loose, papery bark is essentially tinder. Gorgeous trees, but keep them at distance.
- Acacia (Wattle) — fine foliage, fast growth, and oil-rich leaves make many species highly flammable.
- Pinus (Pine) — resinous, highly combustible. Not ideal close to homes in bushfire-prone areas.
- Dense Cypress hedges — these burn hot and fast, especially if they dry out. If you want screening close to the house, Westringia or Syzygium are far safer alternatives.

Hardscape as a Fire-Resilient Design Tool
Hardscape is your best friend in a bushfire-conscious garden. Gravel paths, stone retaining walls, paved areas, and non-combustible fencing all serve double duty — they look great and they interrupt fuel continuity.A few practical moves I regularly use in garden planning for hinterland properties:- Gravel or stone mulch paths around the perimeter of the house — these act as firebreaks and keep bark mulch away from the building envelope
- Non-combustible fencing — steel, aluminium, or masonry within the inner zone. Timber fencing directly against the house is a fire bridge
- Raised stone or block garden beds — contain planting, interrupt ground-level fuel spread, and add structure to the design
- Metal or stone edging — separates garden beds from paths and lawn, reducing the chance of fire creeping through continuous vegetation
Maintenance Matters as Much as Design
The best-designed bushfire-resilient garden still needs seasonal maintenance. Dead material, leaf litter in gutters, unmaintained hedges that have gone woody and dry, overhanging branches that have grown since planting — these are all fuel that accumulates over time.Design can account for this. Choosing species that don’t drop excessive leaf litter, designing beds that are easy to access for clean-up, and specifying appropriate spacing so maintenance isn’t a nightmare — all of this should be considered at the design stage, not after planting. It’s one of the reasons a proper landscape design plan pays for itself — you’re not just designing what it looks like in month one, you’re designing for year five and beyond.It’s About Reducing Risk, Not Eliminating It
I want to be honest about what garden design can and can’t do. A well-designed garden with low-fuel planting, defensible space, and strategic hardscape meaningfully reduces the risk of fire reaching your home and gives firefighters a better chance of defending it. But no garden design eliminates bushfire risk entirely. Your home’s construction, your bushfire survival plan, ember protection, water supply — these all matter and they’re outside the scope of landscape design.What I can tell you is that the properties I’ve worked on in hinterland suburbs are better off with a considered design than without one. And the gardens don’t look like a compromise — they look like thoughtful, well-planned outdoor spaces that happen to be safer too.If your property sits within or near the bushfire overlay, check with Gold Coast City Council’s mapping tools to understand your specific requirements, and talk to your building certifier about BAL ratings for any structures.
